Biosafety before your tattoo

Prepare your questions and explore precautions before your session.

01 / Before your tattoo

Your appointment checklist

These observations help you ask questions; they cannot establish that a studio is safe. Stop and ask if something concerns you.

If tattooing begins without appropriate disposable gloves, ask the artist to stop. Do not continue if they refuse to correct the practice.

Module 1 / 6

Hands, gloves and cross-contamination

Hand hygiene and gloves work together. Disposable gloves do not make a phone or other touched surface clean. Gloves must be changed when contaminated or damaged; single-use gloves must not be washed for reuse. Clean hands before and after the procedure and after glove removal. If tattooing starts without appropriate gloves, stop and ask for the practice to be corrected.

In practice

You need to check a reference on your phone during a session. Plan the interruption: do not carry contamination from the phone back to clean supplies. Identify what was touched, perform hand hygiene and change gloves before resuming. Wearing gloves does not remove the need to interrupt a contaminated sequence.

Practice challenge

The artist touches a phone with their gloves. What should happen before tattooing resumes?

Module 2 / 6

Needles and equipment

Needles intended for single use must not be reused between clients. Ask for sterile packaging to be opened for your session. Reusable equipment requires appropriate reprocessing and sterilisation when indicated, according to local requirements and manufacturer instructions. A wipe or an attractive studio is not evidence of sterilisation.

In practice

A client asks whether the needle is new. Show the packaging and explain single use before opening it. If packaging integrity or reusable equipment processing is uncertain, remove the item from use until clarified. Make questions welcome rather than embarrassing.

Practice challenge

What does wiping a used needle prove?

Module 3 / 6

Ink and traceability

Ask about the ink brand, batch, expiry and applicable product requirements. Use individual portions and discard leftovers. Non-sterile water must not be used to dilute ink. Even a sealed ink container can be contaminated; appearance alone cannot establish safety. Keep product information available if a reaction needs investigation. Distilled water is not necessarily sterile. Do not use nonsterile water to dilute ink or rinse needles.

In practice

You need to identify an ink used in an earlier session. A useful record links product, batch and session without publishing client information. Exercise: identify where you would store these details and who could access them. Sealed packaging does not replace traceability.

Practice challenge

A sealed ink bottle means there is no contamination risk. Is that correct?

Module 4 / 6

Protection and local requirements

Protection depends on the procedure, exposure and local requirements. Brazilian Ministry of Health guidance includes disposable masks and gloves. The US OSHA bloodborne-pathogens standard specifies face and eye protection when exposure to blood splashes or droplets is reasonably anticipated. Do not infer a worldwide legal rule from either source. Check the requirements where the service takes place.

In practice

Two clients select the same website language but attend studios in different countries. Language does not determine applicable sanitary rules. Identify the relevant local authority and document protection requirements before working. This course does not replace that check.

Practice challenge

Which source determines the legal requirements for a particular studio?

Module 5 / 6

Work area and sharps

Separate clean supplies from used materials. Surfaces and equipment need appropriate cleaning, disinfection and protection against contamination. Used sharps belong in a suitable puncture-resistant container, not ordinary rubbish. The waste procedure must follow local rules. A photograph cannot verify the studio's complete routine.

In practice

While preparing your station, trace the route from clean supplies to disposal. Would used items cross the clean area? Adjust the layout before starting. Locate the sharps container; do not plan to leave used needles on the work surface for later disposal.

Practice challenge

Where should used needles go?

Module 6 / 6

Aftercare and responsible reporting

Clients should receive aftercare instructions and a contact for questions. A concerning reaction needs assessment by a healthcare professional, not an online diagnosis from a tattoo photograph. Keep relevant product details. Reports to InkedBooking are confidential intake for review, not evidence by themselves that a named artist is unsafe. A rash, poor healing or fever warrants contact with a healthcare professional. Do not diagnose the cause from a photograph.

In practice

A client sends a photograph worried about healing. Do not turn a commercial conversation into a diagnosis. Refer them to a healthcare professional and keep session and product information available. Receiving a concern does not justify an automatic public accusation.

Practice challenge

What is the appropriate response to a concerning reaction?

Final assessment

Complete all six lessons before taking the assessment. All six answers must be correct. You can review the explanations and try again. This is an InkedBooking course requirement, not a regulatory qualification.

1. The artist touches a phone with their gloves. What should happen before tattooing resumes?
2. What does wiping a used needle prove?
3. A sealed ink bottle means there is no contamination risk. Is that correct?
4. Which source determines the legal requirements for a particular studio?
5. Where should used needles go?
6. What is the appropriate response to a concerning reaction?

04 / Sources & scope

Sources & scope

Source material includes historical guidance. Local rules and technical translations must be reviewed before release; language does not determine jurisdiction.

Introductory education, not a studio inspection, professional licence or guarantee of safety. Local requirements apply. Payment and subscription never affect this programme's evidence criteria.

Report a concern privately

This is not an emergency service or a public review. Avoid medical records, sensitive images and unnecessary personal information. Urgent health concerns belong with a healthcare professional; sanitary complaints can also go to the local authority. Reports need human review and never change a public score automatically.

Report intake is not open in this preview.
